The Extent to Which Student-Teachers in the Biology Department at the College of Education, Omar Al-Mukhtar University, Meet Specialized Performance Standards and Indicators: A Perspective from Their Own Viewpoint

Abstract

The current study aimed to reveal the extent to which the specialized performance standards and indicators of biology teachers have been achieved among students-teachers in the Biology Department, Faculty of Education, Omar Al-Mukhtar University, from their point of view. To achieve this, a list of standards and specialized performance indicators for biology teachers issued by the Education and Training Evaluation Authority in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (ETECSA, 2020) was applied, consisting of (71) indicators distributed over (12) standards. The study population and its sample consisted of female students registered in the fourth year of the Biology Department, who numbered (40) students. The researcher used the descriptive method that deals with studying the phenomenon or topic as it is in reality without the researchers’ interference in its variables or trying to adjust it. The study found that the specialized

performance standards and indicators for biology teachers of students-teachers in the biology department are generally available to a high degree, with an average of (2.37) out of (3) and a percentage of (79.16%). Availability to a high degree, except for two criteria that were achieved to a moderate degree, namely: conducting practical experiments, observing safety and security in the laboratory, and familiarity with general basic skills in the field of biology teaching and modern trends in the field of scientific education. The researcher recommended continuing to work with the theoretical educational programs and the practical education program in the department and to continue developing them in accordance with international (specialized) standards for biology teachers. The researcher suggested conducting a study that adopts the development of a "proposed model for a biology teacher preparation program in the light of specialized performance standards and indicators for biology teachers in Libya", as well as conducting similar studies in all Libyan universities.
